Beschreibung

In this practical course, the participants will work in depth through a specific case study, design an appropriate solution procedure, implement it, critically evaluate their algorithm and test it in computational experiments. The course participants present their project in the final presentation.
Topics of the practical course are aligned with the course “Fundamentals of Management Science” and may center, for instance, around design of customized heuristics/metaheuristics, exact optimization methods, or work with specialized optimization software (e.g., IBM ILOG Cplex, Gurobi).

Voraussetzungen

• Mathematical maturity and the ability to write down precise and rigorous arguments. • Solid basic knowledge of modeling and optimization. • Ability to understand and write a pseudocode. • At least basic programming skills. The topics of the practical course are aligned with the course “Fundamentals of Management Science”. Therefore, a successful completion of the course “Fundamentals of Management Science” is a pre-requisite for this practical course.

Lernorganisation

• Block course with lectured theoretical parts, interactive discussions, programming phases and phases for individual independent learning; • Guidance and support by the teaching team during the whole project; • Interim presentation with extensive feedback; • Final presentation, potentially supplemented with a final competition of the designed algorithms; • Targeted usage of blended learning, such as software samples, videos, online forums and discussions;

Leistungsnachweis

Portfolio examination. The final grade may depend, for instance, on: • The designed algorithm and its critical appreciation. • The implementation of the algorithm. • Computational experiments. • Final presentation, recommendation and managerial insights. The grading scheme is announced in the beginning of the course.

Literatur

Recommended literature usually includes recent scientific articles as well as further scientific
articles or books relevant for the studied topic.
