Beschreibung

In this seminar, we examine practice-relevant aspects of operational, tactical and strategic planning in production and logistics as well as available management-science methods that assist the decision maker. Seminar topics are usually based on a case study, a research article or a book chapter. Most literature is in English, therefore the ability to read fluently texts in English is required. We intend to relate the seminar topics to actual scientific discussions as well as to our current research. The specific theme of the seminar for the current term will be announced on the website of our Chair. The course participants are invited to gain deep understanding of their research topic by preparing a seminar paper and presenting their findings in the final workshop of the course. All the topics will be processed in groups of two or three students. Depending on the preferences of the group, it is possible to formulate individual subtopics of the common group topic.

Voraussetzungen

Interest in quantitative methods. Ability to understand optimization models and to set up own optimization models. We advise that the applicants have completed the course "Management Science" or an equivalent course on operations research methods. Fluent reading of texts in English. Course participants are encouraged to write their seminar papers in English.

Lernorganisation

Independent and critical elaboration on a research question in Management Science. Interactive presentation and discussions.

Leistungsnachweis

A student research paper, a final presentation and a short oral discussion (review) of a peer student research paper. In order to assist the course participants by discussing their interim results, course participants may also have to give a short interim presentation.

Course highlights (e.g., web-materials, guest lecturers)
The course utilizes blended learning approaches. Classroom activities will be complemented with handouts and e-learning modules. The course also intends to host a motivating external guest lecture/presentation from the topical area of current student theses. Guest speakers are either distinguished researchers or managers with first-hand experience in digital transformation in companies or in the planning of production and logistic systems.
