We will keep you informed about important dates, new developments, and changes affecting the Department of Information Systems, in particular Information Systems courses.
Current courses and assignments in the Information Systems Department.xlsx (as of winter semester 2025/2026)
You must complete both the mandatory seminar and your final thesis at one of the chairs belonging to the Information Systems department, as listed at https://www.winfo.uni-passau.de/en/the-department.
Other chairs or teaching units are not part of the Information Systems department, even if they may offer individual courses within the field of “Information Systems.”
At the end of the pre-semester, there is a common registration or application period for seminars at the School of Business, Economics and Information Systems . Within this period, you can apply for a seminar place via the respective online form of the individual business informatics chairs. Please note that you can only apply for a seminar in the Information Systems department. The coordination of the allocation of places in cases of hardship is carried out internally between the Information Systems Chairs.
For final theses, the chairs have individual requirements and registration periods (e.g. registration only possible at the end of the previous semester, registration also possible during an ongoing semester). Please refer to the information provided by the individual chairs.
Preliminary note:
Please note that you can contribute a maximum of 15 ECTS credits to the area Interdisciplinary Specialization.
Courses - including those from other faculties - will always be credited with the exact number of ECTS indicated. Partial crediting is not possible (e.g., 5 out of 7 ECTS).
If adding another course would cause you to exceed the 15 ECTS limit, that course cannot be counted toward this area.
Plan carefully which courses you wish to include in Interdisciplinary Specialization. Later reassignments into or out of this area are not possible.
Use this opportunity to flexibly integrate additional courses that reflect your personal interests and strengths and enhance your employability.
Procedure:
Note:
The application process described above applies only to students in the Master of Information Systems.
Students in the Master of Business Administration with a focus on Information Systems may only include courses from other business-related master’s programs as substitutes for specialization modules, also up to a maximum of 15 ECTS. No special approval is required for that.
No. The sum of the courses you take in the ‘Interdisciplinary specialisation’ area must be less than or equal to 15 ECTS. It is not possible to credit the ECTS of a course only proportionately. You should therefore plan exactly which courses you would like to include here and register these courses in good time (see ‘How do I include courses in the “Interdisciplinary specialisation” area’).
The course Fundamentals of Business Analytics can be counted toward Interdisciplinary Specialization in the Master of Information Systems program.
No approval is necessary.
This course is designed for first-semester master’s students who wish to refresh their methodological knowledge to better prepare for university-level master’s studies. It is a valuable complementary offering and does not replace or displace other study content.
You should take it with intrinsic motivation - we explicitly recommend doing so.
In principle, it is also possible to include courses that are already defined in the module catalogue in other areas in the area of interdisciplinary specialisation, provided that the minimum number of ECTS to be achieved has already been reached in the area in which the course in question is listed.
However, a corresponding application must be made and approved before registering for the examination. A subsequent rebooking of already booked examination achievements in the area of interdisciplinary specialisation is not possible.
You can (with the exception of the areas ‘Interdisciplinary specialisation’ or ‘Courses from other business and economics degree programmes’) take more than the minimum required number of ECTS credits in an area. A course listed in the module catalogue, which is classified in an area for which the minimum number of ECTS has already been achieved, can therefore be taken additionally as long as not all the necessary examinations have already been completed. For example, you can take 15 ECTS in the field of methods and all courses passed will also be shown on your certificate and used to determine your Master's grade.
No, this is not possible because ZKK courses are not Master's courses.
If a course can be credited in different areas according to the module catalogue, you must select the correct area in which the course is to be credited when registering in Campusportal or when registering at the department. Please plan your studies in accordance with the regulations applicable to your degree so that it is not necessary to transfer credits. The StuPo does not provide for any rebookings. This means that you are not entitled to have any errors made in the allocation during enrolment corrected.
The examination office will automatically offset up to 2 ECTS credits from the field of Economic Foundations with the area of Information Systems, provided that this is necessary to obtain the degree. This will only apply if all other requirements for graduation have been met at the time of graduation.
This rule exists because it is currently not possible to achieve exactly 18 ECTS in the field of Economic Foundations. Such offsetting only takes place from Economic Foundations to Information Systems and only up to a maximum of 2 ECTS.
Unfortunately, a course that has already been taken to obtain a bachelor's degree cannot be taken again to obtain a master's degree.
The situation is different if you are aiming for several degrees at the same qualification level. For example, you can only complete a course that is included in both the Master Business Administration and Master Information Systems once (e.g., in the Master BA) and have it credited to the other degree program (e.g., the Master IS) upon request.
